What you need to know about the new environmental tax in Madeira
Dear hikers and nature lovers,
We wish to inform you of a new measure implemented by the Portuguese government concerning hiking in Madeira. Effective January 1, 2025, an environmental tax of €3 per hike per person will be applied to non-residents for access to over 30 routes managed by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (ICNF) of Madeira.
Purpose of the Tax
This initiative aims to manage the increasing flow of visitors on the trails and contribute to the protection of the island’s natural landscape. The funds collected will be used to finance conservation efforts, including the maintenance, cleaning, and preservation of trails, as part of sustainable tourism.
Payment Methods
The environmental contribution of €3 per hike, totaling €15 per person for a five-hike stay, can be paid in two ways:
-
Before Departure: You can make the payment through our agency, Sud Evasion, which will be responsible for transferring it to our local partner in Madeira.
-
On-site: Payment can also be made upon your arrival on the first day of your stay.
Please note that hikers who do not pay this tax may face fines of up to €50.
