Formed by lagoons and salt streams, seawater, and salt pans, it is one of the most important wetland areas in the country. It also hosts a wide variety of fauna and flora and provides an important habitat for thousands of aquatic birds, which find the best conditions for breeding and wintering there. The Castro Marim marsh is also synonymous with the protection and reproduction of many species of fish, mollusks, and crustaceans, and thus serves as a "natural breeding ground".
